One example of a major manufacturer in the garment district was Snellenburg's, a leading clothier in Philadelphia for generations. Joseph Snellenburg opened his shop in the 1850s on South Street and later ran one of his two retail stores here at this triangular property. The company employed 1,600 people, and included another retail store on Market Street and a manufacturing operation on North 3rd Street, where other German Jewish clothing houses were located. Snellenburg's remained in business well into the 20th century.
