Asociacion de Puertorriqueños en Marcha: "Deciding to Fix the Area"

Abandoned Houses

600 diamond Street

In 1970 a group of Puerto Rican social activists, fueled by a lack of cultural sensitivity and bilingual services in Philadelphia sought to change the status quo of their economically and politically marginalized community members. Thus was founded APM—the Association of Puerto Ricans on the March. It began with health services and then eventually developed the human services and community development components. Today APM has expanded from working with just the Puerto Rican community. They have built hundreds of low-income rental units and houses, supermarkets, banks, and more, all in an effort to improve the quality of life in North Philadelphia.
