10th and Federal Streets

Elias and Mariette Bitar settled in Philadelphia in the 1970s. In response to the city's lack of Middle Eastern grocery stores, they opened a small shop and pita bakery on the corner of 10th and Federal streets, in the neighborhood home to one of Philadelphia's earliest Lebanese settlements. That store, Bitar's, is now a major restaurant supplier, and the Bitar family owns three popular Middle Eastern restaurants throughout the city.
